How to care for your flowers

Unpacking

Take your flowers out of the carry box, while supporting the base of the box and remove the tissue wrapped around your flowers and any in the top of the vase. Your flowers are now ready to enjoy. It is really important to unwrap them as it allows air to circulate round them.

Position

Flowers like a cool, draught free location. Avoid putting them in your warmest room, by a radiator, where the draught from opening a door catches them or on the windowsill where the sun will shine directly on them during the day. It can shorten your flowers life by as much as half. In hot weather do put them in your coolest room. Roses especially must be kept under 21 degrees to prolong their life otherwise bacteria forms in the stem and the heads nod downwards.

Water

Flowers are thirsty things. They drink the most water in their first 48 hours. Your flowers have been delivered in fresh water containing flower food and so you don't need to do anything straight away.

A couple of sachets of flower food is included with your delivery so that when you change the water you can add flower food. Don't believe any old wives tales about adding lemonade, sugar, aspirin or any other items to your water. Your flowers need proper flower food. It stops bacteria developing in the water and give the flowers all the nutrients they need to develop to their best size and colour. The sachet contains enough food for one litre of water which is a full vase. Flower food gives your flowers 50% extra length of life!

Ideally change the water every 2-3 days (especially in hot weather) but at the very least do it weekly. Wash the vase with washing up liquid when you change the water to remove any bacteria.

Flower Care

At the same time as changing the water, cut a little off the stems if you can with some sharp scissors. This helps the flowers take up more water and removes any possible bacteria blockages in the stems. Cutting on a slant lets them take up more water than cutting at a right angle.

Remove any flowers that go over. It is important that no foliage is underwater as this encourages bacteria in the water. If any loose foliage of anything dips under the water then remove it.

I know this sounds like hard work but it gives you all the knowledge you need to get the very best from your flowers.

Do enjoy your flowers. I am a young company facing unprecedented times and other people do like to see reviews to see whether my flowers are good, so do please write a review on my Google page Pip Bensley Flowers.
